What Is a Wedding Nanny? And Why a Child-Inclusive Wedding Needs One

A wedding nanny is a trained carer whose only role on the day is your youngest guests. Here is what that looks like, and why it changes the day for everyone.

Children gathered together at a wedding with a Bloom & Nurture carer

A wedding nanny is a trained, experienced carer who looks after the children at your wedding, and does nothing else. They arrive before the first guest, set up a calm space for the children, and stay until the last child is collected. Parents are free to be fully present, and the children have a celebration of their own.

What a wedding nanny is

The role is simple. One professional, present for one purpose: the wellbeing, safety and enjoyment of the children in attendance.

They are not a guest asked to keep an eye on things. They are not venue staff managing children between other duties. They bring training, experience with children, and a plan for the day.

What they do on the day

Long before the ceremony, a good wedding nanny has spoken with you about which children are attending, their ages, and anything their parents have shared, from nap times to allergies.

On the day, they:

  • arrive early and prepare the children’s space
  • welcome each child and parent on arrival
  • guide age-appropriate activities, meals and quiet time
  • settle the moments that every wedding has: nerves, tiredness, a missing parent
  • hand each child back safely at the end of the evening

They don’t simply supervise. They engage, so the children are not waiting for the adults’ celebration to end.

Why it matters

Without dedicated care, the pattern is familiar. A parent leaves the ceremony to settle a toddler. Another leaves the reception early because a child is overtired. Everyone is there, but few are fully present.

A wedding nanny changes that. It is less a convenience than a quiet upgrade to the day for every family in the room, and a kind gesture from the couple.

How many carers do you need?

It depends on the children’s ages. As a guide, we plan for a maximum of one carer to every five children, and one carer to every three for children under three. We confirm the right number once we know your guest list.

What to look for

  • current Blue Card (Queensland) or Working With Children Check (New South Wales) for every carer
  • current first aid certification
  • experience caring for children at events, not only in homes
  • a clear planning conversation before the day
  • carers who are thoughtfully matched to the children attending

Questions couples ask

How is a wedding nanny different from asking a relative to help?

A relative is also a guest, with their own celebration to enjoy. A wedding nanny is there only for the children, with training and a plan, so no family member needs to be on duty.

Do wedding nannies stay for the whole event?

Yes. Our carers arrive before guests and stay until the last child is collected, or until an agreed earlier finish if the children leave at a set time.

Can they care for babies and toddlers?

Yes. Younger children are planned with smaller groups and a calm, quiet space for rest.

How do we book?

It begins with an enquiry. We learn about your date, venue and guest list, then prepare a personal proposal and stay in touch while you plan.
